Improved Roman Holdfast

The holdfast is one of the oldest and most versatile woodworking clamps, and is enjoying renewed interest among hand-tool woodworkers. This model is based on what appears to be a holdfast in the Herculaneum workbench. This Roman era holdfast is very different from forms common today in that the foot comes straight down on the work, rather than pressing at a tangent. Our chief improvement is the upset forged foot. These hold fasts are longer than previous models we have made in order to accommodate thicker bench tops and taller work. Forged from 4140, medium carbon steel and are sized for a 3/4" workbench hole. This holdfast works well even in 6" thick bench tops. The price is for each holdfast.
