Utility / Splitting Wedge

Inspired by our experience with stubborn splits, bouncing wedges, and bound up chainsaws, we've replaced our double tapered wedge with this utility/ splitting wedge. 
This one checks a few different boxes than our smaller wedges.  Just as our smaller wedges, this heavier wedge is 4140 steel, with hardened and tempered edge, and an unhardened striking face.   

A full  2 1/2 width gives a wider wedging face than most splitting wedges,  while being thin enough in its edge to set easily into tightening saw kerfs, or  the starting splits of log faces.  Lengthways corners are eased, but not rounded, to give maximum contact and level lifting action.  Striking face corners are returned beveled, and the need to redress the relatively soft striking face under heavy use is expected.
